Rice rejects quick fix in Mideast

Rice rejects quick fix in Mideast WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice rejected the "false promise" of an immediate cease-fire in the spreading war between Israel and Hezbollah on Friday and said she would seek long-term peace during a trip to the Mideast beginning Sunday.
Kinda like the false promise of a "free Iraq" spreading Democracy in the middle east? Kinda like the false promise that the "quick fix" of dismantling Iran's nuclear program now will put an end to their nuclear ambitions forever?

Be Mindful Of the Consequences

Bush, Allies Seek Consensus on Mideast - 16 Jul 2006 at 10:23am - World leaders, mindful of turbulent Mideast politics, struggled Sunday to draft a consensus statement on escalating warfare between Hezbollah and Israel that dominated talks at the summit of wealthy nations...

"Our message to Israel is, look, defend yourself," Bush said. "But as you do so, be mindful of the consequences. So we've urged restraint."
So the rule must be: when defending yourself, be mindful of the consequences, but when pre-empting others, consequences be damned.

Warfare Laws Don't Apply In Time Of War

War on terror ruling worries GOP lawmakers - 2 Jul 2006 at 5:33pm - WASHINGTON -- Two Republican senators said Sunday that Congress must rein in the Supreme Court ruling that international law applies to the Bush administration's conduct in the war on terror.
Does it seem odd to anyone besides me that those (like most GOP lawmakers) who want so badly for the "war on terror" to be perceived as an actual war for legal purposes are also the ones who want the least for laws governing warfare to have any force?
